CRE Brokers Admit to Slacking Off During “March Madness,” Predict Winner of NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament

Highlights from the new Apto National Broker Buzz Poll:

    • Brokers aren’t typically slackers, but just this once they admit to being less productive in order to watch the games
    • Brokers predict Duke University will win the national championship

    DENVER (March 22
, 2019) — "March Madness,” the biggest college basketball event of the year, is under way, and commercial real estate brokers are watching and fixated on their brackets. In a rarity for a high-performing profession, most brokers expect to be less productive during the NCAA men’s basketball tournament over the next two weeks. A significant number also plan to sleep less during the tournament in order to watch the games, according to the latest Apto National Broker Buzz Poll, which was conducted earlier this week by commercial real estate software company Apto.

    Here are the survey results:

    • “Will you be less productive during the tournament?”
      • Yes: 53%
      • No: 47%

    • “Will you sleep less in order to watch the games?”
      • Yes: 46%
      • No: 54%

    • “Will you work different hours in order to watch the games?”
      • Yes: 37%
      • No: 63%

    • “Do you have any money riding on the outcome, either a bet or pool?”
      • Yes: 54%
      • No: 46%

Commenting on the poll results, Tanner McGraw, founder of Apto, said, “The best brokers are typically the most honest, the most knowledgeable and the most productive, so it’s heartening to see brokers admit they expect to be somewhat less productive during the basketball tournament. Still, I fully expect that every real estate deal that needs to close over the next two weeks will be crushed before the buzzer sounds. Commercial brokers can multitask… they will get it done!”

Commercial real estate brokers also predicted which teams would make the Final Four round of the tournament and win the championship. Here are the predictions:

    • East Bracket Winner: Duke
    • Midwest Bracket Winner: North Carolina
    • South Bracket Winner: Toss-up between Virginia and Tennessee
    • West Bracket Winner: Gonzaga
    • National Champ: Duke (50% predict Duke)

Commenting on the predictions, McGraw said: “We love to love Duke and we love to hate them. Let’s just say: May the best team win, and may it be a really fun tournament.”

At the end of the tournament, Apto will identify and announce any of the individual survey respondents who correctly predicted the bracket winners and national champion.
